Pride of Barbados - the National Flower of Barbados The National Flower of Barbados is the Pride of Barbados (Dwarf Poinciana or Flower Fence). This small, graceful tree flowers throughout the year and is a beautiful garden plant. Peacock flowers has beautiful, bowl - shaped flowers, in the colors red, orange, orange - red and yellow. The yellow variety is often called "yellow bird of paradise". The variety of pride of Barbados with red flowers is also called "red bird of paradise". This plant attracts butterflies such as Monarchs, Peacocks and Quins. The plant is also a source of larval food for Monarchs and Queens. References to this flower were recorded as early as 1657. It is a shrub and is often pruned into a low hedge. If untrimmed it grows to a height of 10 to 15 feet. It is a member of the Legume family and can be found in other tropical countries. The Pride of Barbados blooms all year round. |
